Kiribati presidential election, 2007

The 2007 presidential election was held in Kiribati on 17 October 2007, subsequent to the carried out on 22 August 2007, and August 30, 2007 parliamentary elections in Kiribati in 2007 for the ninth maneaba ni Maungatabu.

During the first parliamentary session four candidates were nominated: Anote Tong, Patrick Tatireta, Timon Aneri and Nabuti Mwemwenikarawa. The opposition of the established Harry Tong ( Tongs Anote brother) and Tetaua Tai Tai were not nominated on the second ballot as a presidential candidate, after which the opposition called for a boycott of the election.

As a result of the call for a boycott, the turnout was only about 50 % of the approximately 43,000 registered voters. Tong won over 15,500 votes, Mwemwenikarawa won more than 8,000 votes, and Tatireta Aneri each won with 400 votes.

President Anote Tong was re-elected with about 64 % of the vote from 23 electoral districts and thus took his second term.

On 23 October 2007 Tong appointed his second cabinet of eleven members, who were sworn in on the same day.
