Kiribati presidential election, 2012

The presidential election in Kiribati in 2012 took place on January 13, 2012 then in 2011 for the tenth maneaba ni Maungatabu for the term 2012 to 2015 rather than to the carried out on 21 October and 28 October 2011 Parliamentary election in Kiribati.

The incumbent president Anote Tong sought thereby re-election to his third term of office, ending a long period of speculation about his reelection decision.

Candidates

On 25 November 2011, re-elected in the first parliamentary session Taomati T. Luta by the ruling party BTK spokesman. On the same day three presidential candidates were nominated by the Parliament: the incumbent since 2003 Anote Tong of the BTK, the physician and politician Tetaua Tai Tai, and former leader of the party Karikirakean Tei - Kiribati Rimeta Beniamina, son of former Vice President Beniamina Tiinga.

Election date

The original scheduled on December 30, 2011 election was postponed to January 13, 2012 in order to allow the voters to travel to and from the home islands on the occasion of the New Year.

Poll

The turnout in the 23 electoral districts was approximately 68 % of the approximately 40,000 registered voters. They had thus increased approximately 50 % turnout of the presidential election in Kiribati in 2007 to its boycott the then opposition, including Tong's brother Harry Tong, called.

Election result

President Tong was re-elected with 42 % of the vote in his third term of office from 2012 to 2015 and struck Tetaua Tai Tai and Rimeta Beniamina, the opposition leader of the previous Parliament.
