Kirovgrad

Kirowgrad (Russian Кировград ) is a town in Sverdlovsk Oblast (Russia) with 21,035 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). Kirowgrad is not to be confused with the large city of Kirovohrad ( Kirovograd russian ) in Ukraine.

Geography

The city is located on the eastern edge of the Middle Urals, about 100 km northwest of the Oblasthauptstadt Yekaterinburg in the headwaters of the Neiwa, the left source flow of Niza in the river system of the Ob.

Kirowgrad is the center of a district of the same city.

Kirowgrad the railway Permian Kushva ( station Goroblagodatskaja ) is a 9 km long branch line station Schurala - Yekaterinburg connected. The station of the city is called Jeschowaja ( Ежёвая ).

History

In place of the present town, the village Kalatai, later Kalata originated in the 17th century. At the beginning of the 18th century with the dismantling near discovered copper ore begun. 1910-12 the copper smelter Kalatinski Sawod was built to the same name was a working class neighborhood. This was awarded in 1932 under the name Kalata city law. In 1935 it was renamed the Kirowgrad, after the 1934 murdered Soviet statesman Sergei Kirov.

Culture and sights

In Kirowgrad there is a Historical and Folk Museum.

Economy

The copper combine Kirowgrad with mine, enrichment factory, copper smelter and chemical plant is one of the largest companies in the ferrous metallurgy of the Urals. There is also a plant for tungsten, titanium and cobalt alloys.
