Kitakami River

The Kitakami ( Jap北上 川, Kitakami -gawa, dt "northern, upper river " ) is a river on the main Japanese island of Honshu.

It is 249 km long and has a catchment area of ​​10,150 km ², which extends across the prefectures of Iwate and Miyagi. The catchment area is the largest in the Tohoku region, and the fourth largest country. At the Edo period it was used for transporting rice to the capital Edo especially. As a flood control measure the flow at the level of the city Tome was divided into two tributaries. During the Kyūkitakami flows into the Bay of Sendai in the center of Ishinomaki, opens the Shinkitakami in the Bay of Oppa.
