History

The market belonged to Rentamt Landshut and the district court Griesbach of the Electorate of Bavaria. Kößlarn had a market court magistrate own rights.

Settlement beginnings

The Kößlarner seal from 1488 has the name " kosl - orn ". The ending- orn, often arun - or - arn, points to a proposed settlement of a fundamental rule in the period from 1000 to 1200 at the latest. Probably the colonization of the Counts of Formbach was driven, where the Grafenwald belonged at that time. The ending suggests that the settlement site should fulfill a special mission. The syllable kosl leaves etymologically two assumptions: either were in the settlement Boilermakers employed or the first settlement was founded for pigs. For the former supposition is the fact that all the raw materials that are needed for a blacksmith, were sufficiently available. Water and wood were plentiful and available evidence of ore deposits still existing today Erdaufwürfe and pits.

Beginning of the pilgrimage

1364 rode the Earl of places near the castle past Kößlhof and wanted to cross the creek. When the horses shied, the Earl returned to his servants, and found in a juniper tree a carved image of Mary with the infant Jesus in her arms. The pious Count had a wooden hut for the image build and was able to continue its way over the brook without hindrance. In the same year appeared the image of Mary his first miracle: the terminally ill Kößlbauer had himself carried to Marie Picture and prayed. His faith and trust in God were rewarded and he was able to walk on their own back home. The history of this miraculous healing spread quickly and many sick and suffering people sought help at the mercy of mother at Kößlhof. Through the many offerings and donations of the pilgrims a small stone church with three altars has already been built in 1400, which in 1443 received her ordination. A document from 1448 is already leading to 137 parishes, which made the pilgrimage with cross and banners after Kößlarn and pilgrimages. Until the Reformation Kößlarn was the most visited Marian shrine in " sub- state" of Bavaria. 1451, there was already the second church building. Plaques and murals in the church have today back to the beginnings of the pilgrimage in Kößlarn.

The heyday of pilgrimage

Originally belonged Kößlarn, which had his name now " inherited " from Kößlhof, nor to the parish Münster. As the chaplain of Münster, however, was overwhelmed by the crowds of pilgrims and pilgrimage pastoral care, a position for a second Kaplan was created in Kößlarn, which was given the task to read the daily show. During this time, from the " courtyard in front of the green forest Kössl " quickly a small village with all the necessary trades and crafts for the supply and support of numerous pilgrims. On January 9, 1474 Kößlarn received by Duke Ludwig the Rich permission " to the pilgrims open wine and beer pour out " and build restaurants. The village Kößlarn became the ducal market. To ensure the pastoral care of pilgrims, the parish cathedral was transferred to the parts Kühnham and Kößlarn by Pope Sixtus IV in 1476 the Cistercian monastery Alder creek. 1478 The market was a private parochial vicar and a private chaplain and a pilgrimage preacher, reaching pastoral at least partly independence. During the heyday of pilgrimage six priests were in Kößlarn therefore active. During the years 1461 - 1480 the cemetery was built in attachment.

As a further indication of the flourishing pilgrimage also the production of the showpiece of the Kößlarner church in 1487 can be interpreted: Personal resources of the market, the silver Madonna was then made by the goldsmith Balthasar Waltenberger, which is now on display at Votivraum the church.
