Kulmbach (district)

The district of Kulmbach is located in the center of the district of Upper Franconia in Bavaria. Neighboring districts are in the north of the county Kronach and the county court, on the east and south of the district of Bayreuth and in the west the district of Lichtenfels.

Geography

The area of the district of Kulmbach has in the North East share of the Franconian Forest, to the east at the Fichtelgebirge, in the southwest and west by the Franconian Switzerland and the Obermainischen hills. The largest rivers of the district are the two sources of the River Main, the White Main ( approximately in the middle of the circle) and the Red Main ( in the south), which unite to form the Main at the western edge of the city of Kulmbach.

History

The area of present-day district Kulmbach belonged before 1800 mainly with the Principality of Bayreuth ( Hohenzollern). 1810 the area came to Bavaria. Already in 1804, the district court Stadtsteinach and then in 1812, the district court Kulmbach was built. Both belonged to the main circuit or 1817 Upper Main Circle ( 1838 Upper Franconia ). In 1852 the district court Thurnau was built. The two district courts Kulmbach and Thurnau were united in 1862 to the county of Kulmbach. At the same time, the county town of Steinach from the eponymous district court arose. 1890 retired from the city of Kulmbach from the district office and was an immediate circular city. From the district offices Kulmbach and Stadtsteinach 1939, the district offices or from the districts, the counties and the city of Kulmbach Steinach. 1940, the town of Kulmbach, was incorporated into the district of Kulmbach, but was in 1945 reversed.

As part of local government reform in 1972, the largest part of the district Kulmbach with the independent city of Kulmbach, the county town of Steinach ( without market Seibelsdorf ) and the market Wonsees the former county Ebermannstadt was united to the new district of Kulmbach. The city of Kulmbach was granted the status of a district town for the loss of freedom circle.

Economy and infrastructure

The district of Kulmbach is the third most important food location in Bavaria. 30 % of the industrial workforce is employed in this sector (beer, Meat and Sausage, baked goods, spices). Kulmbach is a location of the Federal Research Centre for Nutrition and Food, specifically the Federal Institute for Meat Research. Other important industries are the textile industry (20% of industrial employment ) and mechanical engineering ( 12%).

Traffic

The Ludwig- East-West Railway reached in 1846 by Lichtenfels coming over Kulmbach main up at the train station New Market Wirsberg and crossed as early as 1846, despite the technical difficulties, including through the inclined plane, the mountain ranges of the Fichtelgebirge to the end point Hof an der Saale. From New Market Wirsberg from 1853 Bayreuth was connected by the railway Bayreuth New Market Wirsberg to the rail network.
