Las Khorey

Region

Laasqorey ( Somali: Laasqoray, Arabic لاسقرى, DMG Lāsqoray ), also Lasqoray, Las Qorei, Las Khorey, Las Khoreh or Las Koreh written, is a port city and a district in the Sanaag region in northern Somalia with about 8,400 inhabitants, mainly from the communities of Wars Angeli, a sub- clan of the Harti Darod.

The area is claimed by both the de facto independent Somaliland as well as the de facto autonomous state of Puntland part.

History

Laasqorey is several centuries old and home to several historic buildings and archaeological sites that are still largely unexplored. The very influential in the region to colonization by the United Kingdom Wars Angeli Sultanate, it served as the capital.

Between 2007 and 2009, part of the core area of the short-lived, however, only part of the autonomous State Maakhir.

Economy

The non-governmental organization Adeso (formerly Horn Relief ) and local actors working on the development of the city, in order to strengthen the importance of trade through the port of Laasqorey as well as with the hinterland, to create employment opportunities and expand the infrastructure.

In the southwest of the town there is a small airport.

Policy

Laasqorey was much less affected by the Somali civil war for many years, as a place in central or southern Somalia. The years lasting border dispute between Somaliland and Puntland, mixed with Streitigekeiten the various Northern Somali clans and unresolved political questions, whether you hold it with Puntland on a joint Somalia or better Somaliland to support in his bid to be recognized as a new independent state, are repeatedly a threat.

In July 2008, troops invaded Somaliland after a Laasqorey and occupied the city and the harbor, ostensibly to free kidnapped German, which there by pirates (see piracy off the Somali coast ) were recorded. Puntland had been withdrawn at the request of local clan elders, who wanted to negotiate in a neutral frame for the release of the kidnapped his troops from Laasqorey. Representatives of puntländischen military said they would take the place again.
