A lateral ( from Latin lateralis "lateral", also Laterallaut ) is a speech sound in which the articulatory overcoming mode is not on the sagittal suture of the oral cavity as in the sagittal plane, but on the sides.

In the formation of laterals takes place usually not noise -causing tightness formation along the tongue muscle.

The acoustic impression of all laterals is the one l

Most laterals are approximant, there are also lateral fricative:

  • Voiced alveolar lateral approximant [ l]
  • Velarisierter alveolar lateral approximant [ ɫ ]
  • Retroflex lateral approximant [ ɭ ]
  • Palatal lateral approximant [ ʎ ]
  • Velar lateral approximant [ ʟ ]
  • Alveolar lateral flap [ ɺ ]
  • Voiceless alveolar fricative -lateral [ ɬ ]
  • Voiced alveolar fricative -lateral [ ɮ ]

There are also connections between plosives and laterals. These so-called affricates, the lock solution of the actual plosive is not complete, but rather is transferred in the following fricative.

The lateral affricates are heterorgane affricates:

  • Voiceless alveolar lateral affricate - [ tɬ ]
  • Aspirated voiceless alveolar lateral affricate - [ tɬ ʰ ]
  • Voiced alveolar -lateral affricate [ dɮ ]

Lateral and r- sounds are summed together earlier than Liquid.
