Le Marin

Le Marin is a commune with 8552 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the overseas department of Martinique in the region of Martinique. Le Marin is next to Saint- Pierre and La Trinité one of the three sub-prefectures in Martinique.

Geography

Le Marin is located in the south of the Caribbean island of Martinique. The municipality extends from the historic town center in a deep bay of the Caribbean Sea to the Atlantic coast in the west.

The place is an important holiday center. Its port is the starting point for trips to nearby coral reefs and sailing towards St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines. The marina of Le Marin is one of the largest in the Caribbean.

History

  • In the bay of Le Marin, the French established one of its first settlements on Martinique.
  • Remains of fortifications testify to repeated clashes with England.

Attractions

  • The 1766 built in the Jesuit style church of Saint- Étienne is one of the finest monuments of Martinique. It has a magnificent marble altar with interesting statues.
