Lewis O. Barrows

Lewis Orin Barrows ( born June 7, 1893 in Newport, Penobscot County, Maine; † January 30, 1967 in Pittsfield, Somerset County, Maine ) was an American politician and from 1937 to 1941 governor of Maine.

Early years and political rise

After primary school Barrows graduated from the University of Maine. After that, he spent 12 years Treasurer of the city of Newport. As a member of the Republican Party in 1926 he was a member of the National Council of Maine in the year. Between 1927 and 1933 he was a member of the consulting staff of the Governor of Maine, and from 1935 to 1936 he was State Secretary in the state.

Governor of Maine

In 1936, Lewis Barrow was elected as a candidate of his party for the new governor. He took up his new post on January 6, 1937 and after a very re-election in 1938 until January 1, 1941 officiate. During this time he was able to secure federal aid for the construction of new bridges, highways and public buildings. He also managed to pay down the debt and establish a balanced budget. The school policy was supported by a higher budget and improve the pension system. The powers of the Commission to further develop Maine have been extended.

At the end of his tenure, Barrows withdrew from politics. In the following years he worked for Liberty Mutual Insurance Company, a Boston-based insurance company. Ex - Governor Barrows died on 30 January 1967. He was married to Pauline Henderson, with whom he had a child.
