Fundamental to the classification of localities

The villages ( Macedonian naseleni mesta ) Macedonia after settlement geographical and socio-economic criteria in urban (cities, mazed. Gradovi ) and rural (villages mazed. Sela ) divided. There are currently a total of 1762 villages in Macedonia, including 34 towns and 1728 villages.

141 rural towns have as a result of depopulation no longer permanent residents, and many of the other rural towns have very few inhabitants. 57.8 % of the population of Macedonia live in the 34 urban localities, only 20.5% in the largest city of Skopje, which is also the only town with more than 100,000 inhabitants.

This classification of localities is independent of the political division of Macedonia in 84 communities. Ten of the municipalities are located entirely or partially in the field of urban village Skopje; at the political level, these together the City of Skopje, a local authority with special status. The other 33 urban villages are each a capital of the homonymous municipality. 41 more communities include only rural villages.
