Orthodox churches

Autocephalous churches

Five main Patriarchates are in Alexandria, Antioch, Constantinople Opel, Jerusalem and Rome. These were the most important Christian bishoprics in the 6th century. Konstantin Opel is a special meaning to ( honorary primacy within the Orthodox Church hierarchy) as the center of Eastern Christianity. However, the position of a Patriarches is not comparable with that of the Pope, who has recently (2006) need for the additional honorary title Patriarch of the West. The seat of the Patriarch of Antioch is located in Damascus. Currently, there are nine Orthodox patriarchates. The patriarchs are the respective churches, they exercise jurisdiction, and shall be elected by the bishops.
