Lockheed Model 9 Orion

The Lockheed L-9 Orion was the last wooden monoplane series Lockheed. In the construction of the Orion many elements from previous Lockheed - series were included: the body of the Vega, the lining of the Air Express, the wings of the Explorer and the retractable landing gear of Altair. The Orion had an enclosed cab with seating for six passengers. The first Orion, tested by Marshall Headle, received its type certificate on May 6, 1931.

Overall, Lockheed built 35 pieces, of which only one remains today. This machine was originally built as Altair later converted to Orion and flown by James H. Doolittle for the energy company Shell under the nickname Lightning Shell. After many years in operation, it was brought to the Museum of Transport Switzerland, where they can still be seen today in the colors of Swissair. However, it was provided during the restoration works with a metal trim. Several different versions were built by the Orion: 9, 9A, 9B, 9C, 9D, 9E, 9F and 9F1.
