Lokca

Lokca is a place and a municipality in the north of Slovakia, with 2290 inhabitants ( 31 December 2011). It is located in Okres Námestovo belonging to the higher administrative unit Žilinský.

Geography

Lokca lies in the traditional landscape Orawa ( German Arwa ) in a valley between the Orava Magura and the Beskids, located at the confluence of the creek with the river Biela Orava Hruštínka, seven kilometers from Námestovo and 26 kilometers from Dolny Kubin.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1554 that the church with the churchyard stood here since 1550th 1665 instead of the wooden church built a brick church. 1683 burned down the church, where the archive was destroyed. In 1739 359 people died of the plague. Apart from agriculture and forestry, timber floating and weaving were well developed. In 1828 the town had 153 houses and 919 inhabitants.

From 1918 to 1969, Lokca endpoint of the forest railway Orava, which was built by Orava Lesná ago. Continuations direction Tvrdošín and Námestovo other hand, were never realized.
