History

Finds evidence of a settlement since the Paleolithic. From the Iron Age increasingly other nations came here. Carthaginians and Phoenicians settled here. From the 2nd century BC, the Romans subjugated the region, and subsequently began an economic boom. From 711, the Moors conquered the region. Loulé was an Arab city that has shaped the historic town center today.

King D.Afonso III. conquered the city in 1249 by the Arabs and gave her 1266 city rights. With the onset Portuguese expeditions and the resultant in the 16th century Portuguese Empire experienced Loulé, like a number of places in the Algarve, an economic boom. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 also called in Loulé produced great destruction which threw back the strong development of the town.

Since the 20th century the city experienced then considerable changes in terms of their economic and urban development. Contributed to this, not least of tourism, of which the county could benefit, for example, with its developed tourism towns such as Quarteira and Vilamoura, attracting international visitors in large numbers.

Nationally known also is the inspired Brazilian Carnival parade of the city, which attracts many visitors every year from across the country.
