Ľubietová

Ľubietová ( Libethen German, Hungarian Libetbánya ) is a town with about 1,000 inhabitants in central Slovakia. It lies in the valley Zvolenska kotlina, at the edge of the Slovak Ore Mountains and the Polana, about 20 km from Banská Bystrica and 30 km from Brezno. The geographical center of Slovakia, the mountain Hrb, is located near the resort.

History

Thanks to the rich copper and iron ore deposits small Ľubietová was a center of medieval mining. The village was mentioned in writing in 1379 for the first time, as it was raised to free royal town. 1388 it is mentioned under the name Lubeta. In the 16th century, the city was one of the founders of the outdoor mountain towns ( with Banská Bystrica, Kremnica, Banska Bela, Banská Štiavnica, Pukanec and Nová Bana ). As a result of the decline of the mining industry in the 18th century Ľubietová was downgraded from a free royal city a simple village. The 1823 discovered mineral Libethenit is named after the German name of the community.
