Ludwig Friedländer

Ludwig Heinrich Friedlander (* July 16, 1824 in Königsberg ( Prussia), † December 16, 1909 in Strasbourg ) was a German classical scholar and cultural historian.

Life

Friedlander studied at the universities of Königsberg, Leipzig and Berlin and habilitated in 1847 in Königsberg with a thesis on Greek grave reliefs of classical philology. In 1856 he became an associate in 1858 full professor of classical philology in Königsberg. He taught there at the same time archeology. After his retirement in 1892 he moved to Strasbourg. 1865/66 and 1874/5 he was rector of the Albertina.

After working for Greek culture and a one-year trip to Italy (1853 /54) Friedlander turned to his chief work, the representations of the moral history of Rome in the period from August to output the Antonine ( first published 1862-1871 ), a very detailed and comprehensive presentation of the cultural history of the Roman Empire in the first two centuries AD. To date, it is considered as a scientific reference work for the private life in ancient Rome. It underwent numerous editions (later edited by Georg Wissowa ) and reprints. Furthermore, published Friedlander commented editions of the ancient poet Juvenal, Martial and Petronius.

His son Paul was an important chemist, the press signatory to Lieselotte Friedlaender was his granddaughter, art historian Georg Dehio his son.

During his studies, he became in 1841 a member of the fraternity Hochhemia Königsberg and was a founding member in 1885 of the fraternity Cheruscia Königsberg.
