Lunigiana
Lunigiana is an historical region in Italy, located in the southern part of the region of Liguria and the northern part of the region of Tuscany.
Location
Lunigiana included the now südligurische La Spezia Province and north Tuscan province of Massa- Carrara and is in the catchment area of the Magra and its mouth in the Ligurian Sea. It extends from Val di Magra to the mountainous Garfagnana Versilia, and up to Sarzana and Albareto in the province of Parma.
Lunigiana also recorded the Cinque Terre, the Val di Vara, the Gulf of La Spezia ( also called the Gulf of Poets ) and the Apuan Alps.
History
The name derives from the town of Luna, called in the Roman Empire Luni (German Monde). Since the 13th century the region was known by the Latin name of Provincia Lunisanae and closely connected with the family of the Malaspina. Fourteen of the communities joined together in a united Italy to Comunità montana Lunigiana. The Association is based in Fivizzano.
