Makov

Makov (Hungarian Trencsénmakó - also older Mako, Polish Maków ) is a municipality in the north-western Slovakia.

Geography

It lies in the valley between the Kysuca Javorník Mountains ( Javorníky ) and the Turzovská Highlands, just 5 km from the Czech border, 20 km from Bytča and 26 km from Čadca.

Makov is located at an altitude between 580 m and 1,000 m. The highest mountain in the area is the Velky Javorník with 1,071 m.

Population

About 90 % of the population are Catholic.

History

A settlement Viszoka - Makov was already mentioned in 1720. Today's church was built in 1895 as a spin out of seven in the municipality Vysoká nad Kysucou united villages.

Economy and Transport

The most important industry is tourism, especially the winter sports. In addition, there are a number of bike paths and hiking trails.

The station is the terminus of the railway line Čadca - Makov ( Kursbuchnr. 128). Regional bus transport is operated by the SAD Žilina.

Through the village the European Route 442 leads to the I/18 from Makov Pass ( Makovský průsmyk ) continue to Great Bitsch, of which the road branches II/487 about Turzovka after Čadca.
