Massongy

Massongy is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region.

Geography

Massongy is located on 428 m above sea level. M., 13 km west-southwest of the town of Thonon -les- Bains ( straight line ). The community extends in the plane of the Bas -Chablais, at the northern foot of Mont de Boisy, south of Lake Geneva.

The area of ​​9.81 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Bas -Chablais. The main part of the area lies on the plateau, which is slightly inclined towards the north. In the north of the municipality extends floor to the Vion, a tributary of Lake Geneva, and in the Bois C OUTi ( 439 m above sea level. M. ). To the south, the municipality area extends up the slope of Mont de Boisy where 690 meters above sea level. M. the highest elevation of Massongy is achieved.

To Massongy include the hamlet settlements Les Grandes Conches (434 m above sea level. M. ) and Sous Etraz (420 m above sea level. M. ) in the plane and Les Rottes (460 m above sea level. M. ) at the foot of Mont de Boisy. Neighboring communities of Massongy are Messery and Excenevex in the north, Sciez in the east, the south and Ballaison Douvaine and Chens- sur -Léman in the West.

History

The area around Massongy was inhabited since Roman times. In the vicinity of the site and along the important route south of Lake Geneva, which passed through the area, numerous remains (coins, bricks and ceramic fragments, wall foundations, graves ) were found from that period.

The name appears in the 14th century for the first time as Massungier in the documents. From a later time, the terms and Massongiacus Massongier have survived. Presumably the name is derived from the Gallo-Roman personal name Massonius and accordingly is estate of Massonius.

Attractions

The village church dates back to the 12th century. The bell tower and the ship were in 1822 underwent extensive renovation. The rectory was built in 1838 new. The Château de Quincy, built in medieval times as a castle, was demolished in the 19th century and replaced by the present building.

Population

With 1498 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Massongy one of the smaller towns in the Haute-Savoie region. In recent decades, a continuous growth of the population was recorded. Outside of the old village and the promising slopes at Mont de Boisy emerged larger family house districts.

Economy and infrastructure

Massongy was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. Massongy in the wine region of Savoie. White wines from the grape Altesse ( locally called roussette ) may be marketed under the protected designation of origin roussette de Savoie. For white wines, red wines and other grape varieties, the AOC Vin de Savoie applies.

Today there are various businesses of the local small business sector. Many working population commuters going about their work in the surrounding larger towns or in the greater Geneva.

The village lies on the main road N5, which runs from Geneva to Thonon -les- Bains. Further road links exist with Ballaison, Messery and Yvoire.
