Maurizio Fondriest

Maurizio Fondriest ( born January 15, 1965 in Cles ) is an Italian racing cyclist. In his playing days he was one of the best classic hunters of cycling.

Career

1987 Fondriest was a professional cyclist. Just one year later, the then 23- year-old won the road bike World Cup, having already made early in the season attention with a 2nd place at Milan-San Remo. In the following years he won mainly in Italian one-day races. He also achieved numerous podium finishes in races of cycling World Cup. In 1991 he won the World Cup for the first time cycling.

However, by far his most successful year was 1993, where he was able to enter only 28 of his 70 career victories. In the jersey of Team Lampre he won this year, among other Milan-San Remo, Fleche Wallonne to the championship of Zurich and the stage race Tirreno- Adriatico and Midi Libre. Due to its consistency with the classics, he also won for the second time the overall standings of the bike world cup. In the following years until his retirement in late 1998 Fondriest was not nearly as successful.

Today, high-quality Italian racing bikes are manufactured under the name " Fondriest ".
