The park was established on 19 June 1909 and is the first national park in northern Queensland. The Millstream, a tributary of the Herbert River, is here with the big Millstream cases the widest, single stage drop in Australia.

The cases owe their origin of volcanic activity before 3 to 1.2 million years than in several outbreaks, the area was covered by a total of three lava flows. The oldest, 3 million years ago, is now visible at the bottom of the valley, the youngest, before 1.2 million years, is found on the upper slopes of the valley. In the Great Millstream cases the three lava flows are visible.

Flora and Fauna

Due to its location in the rain shadow of the Great Dividing Range, the vegetation is characterized by open, dry eucalyptus forests. It is home to numerous mammals, frogs, reptiles and over 160 bird species.
