Montdardier

Montdardier is a commune with 198 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ), which is located in the department of Gard and the Languedoc -Roussillon region. It belongs to Arrondissement Le Vigan and the District of Le Vigan. The place is a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays Viganais. The inhabitants call themselves Montdardiérins or Montdardiérines.

Montdardier is on the road to Santiago de Compostela.

Geography

Montdardier is located in the south of France at an altitude 259-889 m, the place itself is located at about 615 m. The municipal area covers a total of 3,525 hectares ( 35.25 km ²). The place is situated on the secondary road D48, which leads in a north-south direction of Le Vigan after Lodève. The D48 runs on the road an old Roman road which connected the Cevennes with Spain. Montdardier situated in the Parc National des Cevennes, from here run small side roads in the park.

The village lies on the edge of the Causse de Blandas, the village overlooks the valley and the old Roman road.

History

The first mention as Montis Disderii in 1077th The hill on which the town is located, dominates the old Roman road from Le Vigan after Lodève. In the 12th century, here is a first fortress was built, there now is a castle in the neo-Gothic style. A first hospital for the pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago was founded by the Knights Templar.

1469 Montdardier was hit in the subsequent struggles of the Ligue du Bien public, the village and the castle were damaged.

In the wars of religion, the place was again severely damaged. The church and the castle were destroyed when troops of the Duke of Rohan attacked the place. 1792 burned down the palace and was renovated after the revolution. The village stretched afterwards outside the fortifications and became a mountain village.
