Saint-Martial (Gard)

Saint -Martial is a commune of the department of Gard in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. Administratively, it is assigned to the Canton Sumene and the Arrondissement Le Vigan.

Geography

The southern French mountain village with 191 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) is located on the southern edge of the Cevennes. The municipal area stems from the River Rieutord.

The church of Saint -Martial is considered a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture of the 12th century. The challenge of the architect is to slate ( schist ) and crumbly rock to build a stable building was. During the restoration in the 1980s, the walls were freed from the weathered and consumed plaster and exposed stone. The church was probably used to be connected with a mounting system that is but disappeared over the centuries.
