Monticiano

Monticiano is a town with 1509 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Siena, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The site extends over 109 km ². It is located about 20 km southeast of Siena and about 65 km southeast of Florence in the hills of Metalliferous ( metalliferous hills ). The municipality is bounded on the north by the river Feccia and in the south of the Farma, which here also as a border with the province of Grosseto (municipality Rocca Strada ) serves. The Merse flows through the municipal area, but also serves as a border river in the north-west ( to Chiusdino ) in the north and east ( Murlo ).

At its districts include Bagni di Petriolo, Iesa, San Lorenzo a Merse, Tocchi and Scalvaia.

The neighboring municipalities are Chiusdino, Civitella Paganico ( GR), Murlo, Rocca Strada (GR) and Sovicille.

History

First mention is the " Castello di Monticiano " in 1189, as it was in the sphere of influence of the Bishop of Volterra. After the battle of Benevento in 1266 it was occupied by Siena, since the place was the volatile Ghibellines refuge. During the war between Siena and Florence, and before the defeat of Siena Monticiano 1554 was part of the Duchy of Tuscany.

  • Chiesa dei Santi Giusto e Clemente, Romanesque church in the town center
  • Chiesa del Beato Antonio Patrizio, Romanesque church at the entrance, which was named after the patron saint of the town. Contains the Convento di Sant'Agostino ( Convent of Saint Augustine, a sacristy and a cloister from the 14th century. Above the left altar is the painting Morte del Beato Antonio Patrizi of Rutilio Manetti.
