Sovicille

Sovicille is a town with 10,070 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Siena, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The site extends over 143 km ². Sovicille is about 10 km southwest of Siena and is located in the hills of Montagnola in Val di Merse (Val di Merse ), where the rivers Elsa and Rosia spring. Sovicille lies in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, 1797 GG

The districts include Brenna, Rosia, San Rocco a Pilli, Stigliano, Torri and Volte Basse.

The neighboring municipalities are Casole d' Elsa, Chiusdino, Monteriggioni, Monteroni d' Arbia, Monticiano, Murlo and Siena.

History

First was the place on April 23, 1123 by Alexander III. mentioned under the name Sufficille. The name probably derives from the Latin sub ( under ) and ficinulae / ficus ( fig tree ). 1260 the city of Florence was occupied, but after their defeat at the Battle of Montaperti in the same year the city fell to Siena. In the 13th century the church was founded with its own statutes. 1333 Sovicille was raided and burnt down by Pisa.

  • Compagnia della Madonna, Church Ponte allo Spino in the district, was built in the early 17th century to the will of the future Pope Alexander VII.
  • Chiesa di San Bartolomeo ad Ancaiano, Church, contains the work Martirio di San Bartolomeo ( 1644) by Astolfo Petrazzi.
  • Monastero della Santissima Trinità e Santa Mustiola a Torri, already mentioned monastery in 1070.
  • Pieve dei San Giusto e Clemente a Balli, already mentioned in 1078 Pieve.
  • Pieve di San Giovanni Battista a Molli, already mentioned in the 11th century Pieve, which was extensively renovated in the 18th century.

  • Ponte della Pia, medieval bridge over the River Rosia, named after Pia de ' Tolomei.
  • Cetinale Villa, built in 1676-1678 by order of Carlo Fontana Flavio Chigi. 1688 Giardino was formal, also called Giardino degli agrumi, completed in 1705 the Parco della Tebaide ( Thebaid Park).

Traffic

The Siena Airport is located in the municipality of Sovicille, in the ( unofficial ) district Ampugnano ( between Sovicille and San Rocco a Pilli on state road 73 Senese Aretina (SS 73) ). In addition, the eastern municipality is situated on the Strada Statale 223 di Paganico.

Twinning

Sovicille maintains since 2005 a partnership with the community Veitsbronn in Middle Franconia.
