Sarteano

Sarteano is a town with 4691 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Siena, Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The town covers 85.27 km ². It is located about 60 km southeast of Siena, 100 km southeast of Florence, between the valleys of Chiana and Val d' Orcia at Monte Cetona. Castiglioncello del Trinoro is approximately 6 km west situated part of the community. The village itself is divided into five Contraden ( districts ): San Lorenzo, San Bartolomeo, San Martino, Holy Trinity and Sant'Andrea. The neighboring municipalities are Cetona, Chianciano Terme, Chiusi, Pienza, Radicofani and San Casciano dei Bagni.

History

Archaeological finds prove the occupation of the site from the Paleolithic through the Bronze to the Iron Age. The area is packed tombs have been found from the time of the Etruscans. For the first time Sarteano appears in 776 under the name of Vicus Sarturianus. Towards the 11th century Sarteano was the center of an extensive fief under the originally from Lombardy Counts Manenti. 1379 came Sarteano under the influence of the Republic of Siena. 1469 Siena restored the old fortress from the time of the Counts of Manenti. The expansion to a military fort happened in 1528 under the architect Baldassare Peruzzi.

  • Pieve di Santa Vittoria, Pieve, the oldest church building in the village, completed 1205.

Events

  • La Giostra del Saracino, a year in which the five Contraden start since 1982 on the 15th August against each other.
