Murray Rose

Iain Murray Rose ( born January 6, 1939 in Nairn, Scotland, UK, † April 15, 2012 in Sydney) was an Australian swimmer.

Life

Rose was born in Scotland and emigrated with his parents after the Second World War to Australia. At the Olympic Games in 1956 in his new home, he was 17 years old Olympic champion in the 400 m and 1500 m freestyle and the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. He was the youngest Olympic champion, who won gold three times. Four years later at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 he again won gold in the 400m freestyle. In addition, he still won silver over 1500 m freestyle and bronze in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay.

In 1965 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the international swimming sport. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, he was one of the eight flag-bearers who carried the Olympic flag into the stadium.

In April 2012, he died of leukemia at the age of 73 years suffering in Sydney.
