Mürren

View of Murren

Mürren is a traditional Walser mountain village in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. It is car-free and is 1650 meters above sea level. Its also car-free neighboring Gimmelwald is 2.3 kilometers in the south. From Mürren one has a good view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The place is a good starting point for hiking in the summer. 450 residents are at home here; the hotel's capacity is 2000 beds strangers. It is also known the Schilthorn with its revolving restaurant Piz Gloria, where the Bond film was shot Her Majesty's Secret.

Mürren has its own school and two churches, an English or Reformed and Roman Catholic.

History

1257 Mürren was first mentioned in documents as mudflows. In 1345 it was called Murn. The Barons of Wädenswil here possessed rights to the land and people. 1275 was the whole of Peter from Thurn and then to the monastery of Interlaken. Murren was 1931 and 1935 hosted the Alpine World Ski Championships. In Murren takes place annually in the winter, the longest downhill ski race in the world for professionals and amateurs instead, the Inferno race. Every year in August Mürren is additionally also the venue of the famous Inferno Triathlon, which ends at the Schilthorn.

Traffic

You can reach Mürren from Lauterbrunnen by mountain railway Lauterbrunnen- Mürren ( BLM) or from Stechelberg with the cableway LSMS. In Mürren lies the valley station of the Allmendhubelbahn ( SMA).

Murren belongs together with Wengen, Isenfluh, Gimmelwald, and Lauterbrunnen Lauterbrunnen to the political community. The parish includes the entire valley.
