Nadvoitsy

Nadwoizy (Russian Надвоицы, old letters Надвойцы, Finnish Vojatšu ) is an urban-type settlement in North West Russia with 8372 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ). It belongs to the Republic of Karelia.

Geography

Nadwoizy is located on the northern shores of the lake Wygosero. Due to the settlement here runs the White Sea - Baltic Canal, which connects Lake Onega to the White Sea. The Low Wyg as part of the channel has close Nadwoizy many rapids and small waterfalls, of which the best known, the Woizki Waterfall ( Воицкий падун ), is four meters high. Nadwoizy belongs administratively to Rajon Segescha whose administrative center Segescha is located about 15 kilometers south of Nadwoizy.

History

Already in the 16th century was located in the area of ​​today's settlement, the village Woizy ( Воицы ). In the years 1742-1783 the Woizy mine was operated near the village, in which gold was found on the territory of Russia for the first time. In addition to gold and copper was mined in the mine.

In the wake of the First World War in 1916 the Murmansk railway was built through the town. The railway line was at that time from Petrozavodsk to the Kola and had the task of securing the year-round supply Russia with the Allied arms.

Between 1929 and 1930, was built in the White Sea - Baltic Nadwoizy channel. For the construction of forced laborers were (later part of the White Sea - Baltic - bearing ) arising from Solovetsky camp for special use. Between 1933 and 1935, was Nadwoizy administrative center for the White Sea - Baltic stock, in which at times up to 108,000 people were imprisoned. 1942 Nadwoizy received the status of an urban-type settlement. In 1954, an aluminum plant was built in Nadwoizy, the Alaunerde from the Leningrad Oblast used. The Nadwoizki aluminum plant ( Надвоицкий алюминиевый завод ) is now one of RUSAL and is still one of the main employers in the town.

The present name of the town derives from the Russian word nad ( над, German: over ) and Woiz or Woizki Waterfall ( Woizki Padun ) from.

Transport

In the south of Nadwoizy, at the confluence of the White Sea - Baltic Canal in the Wygosero, is the harbor of the settlement. Nadwoizy lies on the railway line Petrozavodsk - Belomorsk. About 10 kilometers west of the settlement proceeds, the Russian highway M18 from Saint Petersburg to Murmansk.
