Naresuan University

The Naresuan University ( Thai มหาวิทยาลัย นเรศวร, Naresuan University, shortly NU) is a public university in Phitsanulok in northern Thailand. It covers the need for higher education for the lower north of Thailand, ie the provinces of Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, Nakhon Sawan, Kamphaeng Phet, Tak, Uttaradit, Phetchabun, Phichit, Phrae and Nan.

History

On January 18, 1964, the Ministry of Education decided, an offshoot of the teachers colleges (College of Education) to set up for the training of teachers in northern Thailand. On January 25, 1967, the College was opened as the fourth campus. 1974 received the College the status of a university and the Srinakarinwirot University in Bangkok has been assigned. On July 29, 1990, the 400th anniversary of the enthronement of its namesake, the University is independent.

Naming

First, there were three names for the new university to shortlist.

The university was eventually named after King Naresuan the Great, who was born in Phitsanulok and the kingdom of Ayutthaya made ​​in the 16th century by the Burmese independent again. Since each use of royal names must be authorized by the reigning king, it was necessary that King Adulyadej Bhumbol agreed to the naming. This took place on 7 October 1989.

Campus

The campus was initially located near the old airport of Phitsanulok. Already in the 1980s, a relocation out of town in the subdistrict Thapho was sought. 16 million baht for it provided in Budget 1987.

The first building was created from the foundation stone laying ceremony on 22 July 1988, the Mingkwan - Building, now the main building with the central administration and the offices of the University President. The name for the building was selected by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn personally and means " charitable ".

Another campus is located in the province of Phayao.
