Nikolsk, Vologda Oblast

Nikolsk (Russian Никольск ) is a small town in north-west Russia. It is located in the Vologda Oblast and has 8511 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 320 km east of the Oblasthauptstadt Vologda on the Jug, the right- source river of the Northern Dvina.

Nikolsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

Nikolsk built in the 15th century as a landing Nikolski pogost (later Nikolskaja sloboda ) over which the trade route between the Northern Dvina and Volga Vetluga and ran along the river Jug. 1780 Nikolsk received city rights.
