No. 453 Squadron RAAF

No. 453 Squadron was a unit of the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II.

History

The unit was set up on 23 May 1941 in Bankstown, New South Wales. It was equipped with Brewester Buffalo. Given the threat posed by Japan moved the Squadron in August 1941 to Singapore. Due to the Japanese invasion of the Malay Peninsula, on 8 December 1941, the unit moved to Ipoh and Kuala Lumpur. They suffered heavy losses and had to be withdrawn with only three operational aircraft to Singapore on 24 December 1941. There she was with the remains of the no. 21 Squadron merged. The Squadron fought until 5 February 1942, six deployable aircraft. The unit was moved to Java, but could not be made ready for use there. She was then retired to Adelaide and there disbanded on 15 March 1942.

On 18 June 1942, the No was. 453 Squadron on the UK site Drem re-erected. It was now equipped with Spitfires. In August 1942 there was a transfer to Hornchurch. In June 1943 we went to Ibsley. From there also ship targets were fought. The unit participated in the Invasion of Normandy. As of June 15, 1944, she operated out of advanced courses in France and moved on June 25, 1944 fully to France. However, the end of September was again moved to the Coltishall to fight from there V1 positions. On 31 May 1945, the unit was disbanded in Hawkinge.
