Novy Oskol

Novy Oskol (Russian: Новый Оскол ) is a city in Belgorod Oblast (Russia) with 19,530 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The city is located about 110 km east of the Oblasthauptstadt Belgorod on the left bank of the Oskol, a left tributary of the opening into the Seversky Donets Don.

Novy Oskol is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons.

History

Novy Oskol was founded in 1637 as Stojaly Ostrog during the Belgorod line of fortifications along the southern boundary of the former Russian Empire.

From 1647 Ostrog was called after the Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich Zarjow - Alexeyev, but since 1655 Novy Oskol ( named after the river; Russian for New Oskol, to distinguish it from the previously existing upriver fixing Oskol, today the town of Stary Oskol, so old Oskol ).

1779 the municipal law as an administrative center of a circle ( Ujesds ) was awarded.

During World War II Novy Oskol was occupied on July 3, 1942 by the German Wehrmacht and recaptured on 28 January 1943 by troops of the Voronezh Front Red Army during advancement toward Belgorod.

Culture and sights

In the village of Welikomichailowka Rajons Novy Oskol is the Museum of the First Cavalry Army, which operated under Semyon Budjonny in the Russian Civil War in this area.

Economy

In Novy Oskol, there are companies in the food industry and the building materials industry.

The city lies on the opened on this section 1897 railway Moscow - Yelets - Waluiki - Donets Basin ( kilometer 678 ).
