Obersülzen

Obersülzen is a municipality in the Rhineland-Palatinate district of Bad Durkheim. It is located in the northwest of the European Metropolitan Region Rhine -Neckar and belongs to the municipality of green urban-rural.

Geography

Geographical location

Obersülzen lies at an altitude of 150 meters in the north- east of the Palatinate, just south of the border with Rheinhessen. West to the Haardt, the eastern edge of the Palatinate Forest, is 5 km air line, to the east by the Upper Rhine Valley to the Rhine about 15 km. The hill country to which the community is embedded, is one of the north-eastern foothills of the Palatinate wine region.

Geology

History

Chronicle

Obersülzen was mentioned as Sulzheim already 767 in the Lorsch Codex. Until 1477 it was owned by the Earl Leininger. Then it was four years managed by the House of Leiningen - Westerburg and the Electoral Palatinate together. In 1481 it came under the sole authority of the electors and the upper office Alzey was assumed Unteramt jurisdiction was Freinsheim.

Today's Protestant church of St. John the Baptist on the eastern edge of the village was first mentioned as a Romanesque fortified church of St. Mauritius in 1141.
