The Old Corner Bookstore is a historic building in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States at the corner of Washington / Tremont Street. It is part of the route of the Freedom Trail.

History

The building was built by Thomas Crease as a home and pharmacy in 1712. At the same location previously was the home of Anne Hutchinson, had there in 1635 held its famous séances and 1638 had been expelled from Massachusetts because of heresy.

From 1832 to 1865 the publishing house Ticknor and Fields, founded by William Ticknor had its seat, which was later renamed after Ticknor James Thomas Fields had included as partners in the building. In the 19th century, the company was in parts one of the major publishing companies in the United States and was the meeting place of famous authors, including Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Charles Dickens and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.. , The publisher had the entire building rented and used only a small part as a sales room. Other rooms were also rented. After the death of Ticknor Fields sold the building to the company EP Dutton, and even after the house was always sold to other publishers and bookstores.

In the 1950s, the building fell into disrepair and was threatened with demolition in 1960, acutely, but could be saved by a timely sale at the Historic Boston, Inc. for $ 100,000 before.
