One Night Only (song)

One Night Only is a song from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls from the year 1981. The song was written by Tom Eyen and Henry Krieger. The content of the musical One Night Only is sung by two performers in different versions. As a soul ballad by the character Effie White and a disco version of the girl group Deena Jones & the Dreams.

Background

Both versions of One Night Only released as a song for the original album of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls in 1982, sung by Jennifer Holliday as Effie and Sheryl Lee Ralph, Loretta Devine, and Deborah Burrell as Deena Jones & the Dreams. One Night Only was later covered by Elaine Paige and Sylvester James. Actor Hugh Jackman sang the song at the 2004 Tony Awards ceremony with the girl group the musical Caroline, or Change, Hairspray and Little Shop of Horrors.

Dreamgirls was filmed in 2006 by Bill Condon and produced by DreamWorks SKG and Paramount. The original versions of One Night Only by Jennifer Hudson as Effie and Beyoncé Knowles, Anika Noni Rose and Sharon Leal were sung as Deena Jones & the Dreams for this film. The production team The Underdogs chaired the production of One Night Only, as well as other songs from the soundtrack album. A remix version of Deena's interpretation of the song was produced by Eric Kupper & Richie Jones and Music World Entertainment and Columbia Records in August 2006 as a promotional single for the movie soundtrack Dreamgirls: Music from the Motion Picture published. This happened four months before the release of the film. The remix version was sampled by American rapper Lil Wayne for his version of One Night Only.

Charts

One Night Only debuted on September 6, 2009 in the British charts at number 67, only by strong download sales. By Rozell Phillips appearance in the British talent show The X Factor, the song was popular again three years after its actual release. One Night Only is the second most successful tracks from the soundtrack album for the film Dreamgirls behind Beyoncé's lists. The song And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going became popular through performances by Nicole Lawrence, Danyl Johnson ( at The X Factor ) and Amber Riley in Glee again.
