Order of Australia

The Order of Australia is an order / decorations, which was introduced by Elizabeth II as Queen of Australia on February 14, 1975 " with the objective of appropriate assessment of Australia's citizens and other persons for extraordinary services." The honors to non - Australians are called "honorary awards".

The Order is divided into a general and a military department and has four classes plus the medal:

  • Knight or Dame ( AK or AD; awarded from 1976 to 1986, from 2014 )
  • Companion ( AC)
  • Officer ( AO)
  • Member ( AM)
  • Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM; since 1976).

History

The Order was established by Elizabeth II, Queen of Australia, and countersigned by laboratory Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, on 14 February 1975. Previously, even the Australians were the only British honors to participate. Originally, there were only three different levels: Companion ( AC), Officer ( AO) and Member ( AM). On May 24, 1976 Knight ( AK), Dame ( AD) and Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM ) were also introduced on the advice of the Liberal Party of Australia Malcolm Fraser 's successor.

The Labor Prime Minister Bob Hawke abolished the categories Knight and Dame but later again. After his election on March 3, 1986 Queen Elizabeth agreed, the former Knights and Dames were not affected. On March 25, 2014 it was announced that the category Knight or Dame would be introduced starting in 2014 at the behest of Prime Minister Tony Abbott again. The number of awards is limited to four per year.

So is Charles, Prince of Wales, a Knight of the Order of Australia. The Queen of Australia is Sovereign of the Order, while the Governor-General of Australia First Knight and Chancellor of the Order.

The Order of Australia is very similar to the Order of Canada. In contrast to the Canadian Order of Australia but is used free for the honor of non- Australians. While only twelve non- Canadians are members of the Order of Canada, there are significantly more non- Australians in the Order of Australia.

Appeal

While the governors of the individual states can give only the title officer and member as well as the Medal of the Order of Australia, the citizens of their own state, only the Governors-General of Australia may appoint a person to Companion. The filing of a person to the Knight or the lady is the Queen of Australia reserved, acting on the recommendation of the Australian Prime Minister.

The various grades are awarded on the basis of the different merits of the recipient:

Any Australian citizen can nominate someone for an honor. The nominations will be from the Order of Australia Council, free from any political influence, reviewed and then forwarded to the Governor-General. The Order is awarded twice a year: On National Day, Australia Day, and the official birthday of the Queen in June.

The Order can not be awarded posthumously; However, if a beneficiary dies after he has accepted the nomination, but has not yet been formally appointed, the appointment remains and shall apply from the death of the recipient.

In August 2009, Joseph Catholic sisters from Sydney started a petition in which they demanded the presentation of the Honorary Companion of the Order of Australia in the neighboring country of East Timor. This is justified by the support of the Timorese people for Australian soldiers in the Battle of Timor during the Second World War.
