Oropeza Province

Oropeza is a province in the northwestern part of the department of Chuquisaca in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The province is one of the ten provinces in the department of Chuquisaca. It borders to the north, west and east by the department of Potosí, to the southeast by the province Yamparáez, on the east by the province Jaime Zudañez, and on the northeast by the Department of Cochabamba.

The province extends approximately between 18 ° 20 'and 19 ° 22' south latitude and 65 ° 00 ' and 65 ° 42 ' west longitude, its extent from east to west is 40 kilometers from north to south 110 km.

Population

The population of the Province Oropeza has risen in the past two decades by nearly two-thirds:

39.6 % of the population are younger than 15 years, the literacy rate in the province is 79.6 %. (1992)

82.2 % of the population speak Spanish, Quechua 69.3%, and 1.7 % Aymara. (1992)

29.8 % of the population have no access to electricity, 41.4 % have no sanitary facilities (1992).

92.0 % of the inhabitants are Roman Catholic, 5.1% are Protestant (1992).

The Oropeza province is divided into three Municipalities:

  • Municipio Poroma - 16,101 inhabitants ( 2001)
  • Municipio Sucre - 215 778 inhabitants ( 2001)
  • Municipio Yotala - 9,497 inhabitants ( 2001)
