Oscar Loew

Work

Loew was the last student of Justus von Liebig. In 1909 he published a work on the Kalkfaktor, in which he pointed out that for the optimum growth of the plants a certain ratio of calcium to magnesium must be present in the soil.. His other areas of work include the synthesis of formaldehyde from methanol and the effect of small amounts of poison.

Loew was in 1893 at the invitation of the Agricultural Department of the Tokyo University in Japan and taught agricultural chemistry, highly valued as a teacher and practitioner, up to leaving in 1907.

Honors

Oskar Loew is an honorary citizen of Marktredwitz.
