Pablo Muñoz Vega

Cardinal Pablo Muñoz Vega SJ (* May 23, 1903 in Mira, Carchi, Ecuador; † 3 June 1994 ) was Archbishop of Quito.

Life

Pablo Muñoz Vega joined in 1918 the Congregation of the Society of Jesus at and studied at the mother house of the Jesuits in Ecuador, at the Colegio Máximo de Oña in Burgos, Spain and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He received on 25 July 1933, Rome, the sacrament of Holy Orders.

On February 7, 1964 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Archbishop of Ceramus and ordered him to Koadjutorerzbischof in the Archdiocese of Quito. The episcopal consecration on March 19, 1964 Cardinal Carlo Confalonieri donated to him, secretary of the then Consistorial ( from 1967 the Congregation for Bishops ); Co-consecrators were Archbishop Antonio Samore, secretary of the Curia and later Cardinal and Archbishop Martin John O'Connor, former rector of the Pontifical North American College. Consequently, he took part in the 2nd Vatican Council. On June 23, 1967 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Archbishop of Quito.

Since the Archdiocese of Quito is traditionally connected with the cardinal bishopric, was Pablo Muñoz Vega on 28 April 1969 by Paul VI. taken as a cardinal priest with the Roman titular church of San Roberto Bellarmine in the College of Cardinals.

Pablo Muñoz Vega 1985 by the management of the Archdiocese of Quito for reasons of age; his request was granted by Pope John Paul II.
