Palman

Palman Bracht (Latin Palmanus Teutonicus Capitanus gentis armigens, * 1290 in Styria; † after 1355 ) was the leader of a mercenary army in Serbia of the 14th century, which consisted of Germans, at least in its initial stage. In the Serbian tradition of this mercenary army as Palmans Ritter ( serb. Palmanovi vítezí ) is known.

Life

Palman Bracht was born at the end of the 13th century in Styria. He was born with a condition called hare lip or cleft lip, a split in the upper lip. He spent his early years in the castle of his father, at age 13, he became a courtier. At 16, he was squire in the service of Henry III. In which he remained until 1310, when his father died. Palman took over his father's legacy and entered the service of the Habsburgs. Under the Habsburgs, he was knighted. At age 27, he settled in Venice his crooked lip operate due to the unrequited love of a countess.
