Paul Ereng

Paul Ereng ( born August 22, 1967 in Kitale, Trans Nzoia District, Kenya ) is a retired Kenyan track and field athlete and Olympic champion.

Ereng was up to 1987 400 - meter runner. After his enrollment in the University of Virginia, he started in early 1988 with a workout in the 800 meters. In the 1988 season, he remained undefeated in the 800 meters and won the NCAA Championships this year and next.

In the XXIV Summer Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 he won the semi-finals in the 800 -meter run in a personal best of 1:44,55 minutes and the subsequent final run the gold medal against defending champions Joaquim Cruz ( silver ) and the Moroccan Saïd Aouita (Bronze ).

At the World Indoor Championships in Budapest, he also won gold in the 800 meters with a new indoor world record of 1:44,84 minutes. 1991 in Seville he could repeat his success, but at the World Championships in Tokyo, he only reached the 4th place. The XVV. 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, he was eliminated in the semifinals.
