Pavel Lungin

Pavel Semenovich Lungin (Russian Павел Семёнович Лунгин; born July 12, 1949 in Moscow, Soviet Union ) is a Russian screenwriter and film director.

Life

Lungin is the son of screenwriter Semyon Lungin, who had written films for Alexander Mitta, Elem Klimov and Larisa Shepitko among others, and the translator Lilijanna Lungina. He studied theoretical linguistics at Moscow State University ( MGU ). After graduating in 1971, he worked as a mathematician and computer scientist at the Institute for Social Research of the Academy of Sciences in Moscow. In 1973, he joined as a science editor for literature Gazeta.

In the years 1974/75 Lungin participated in a course for scriptwriters and directors in Moscow, where Daniela Giorgi was one of his teachers. Since 1977 he has worked full time as a screenwriter.

His first film as a director realized Lungin 1990. With this debut Taxi Blues, with Pyotr Mamonov and Pyotr Suitschenko in the lead roles, he took part in the competition in the same year the film festival in Cannes, where she won the award for best director. Later he still with two more films in the competition of Cannes part ( Luna Park, 1992, and Russian wedding, 2000, who received a Special Jury Prize ). Taxi Blues was also Lungin's first collaboration with the Russian cult musician Pyotr Mamonov, the lyricist and vocalist of the band Swuki Mu, the later in two other films Lungin ( The Island, 2006; Zar, 2009) was seen in lead roles.

Since 1992 Lungin lives with his family in Paris; in 2000 he founded his own production company in Moscow. His film The island received six 2006 Golden Eagle ( Золотой орёл ), including the Best Film and Best Director, and in 2007 the Nika also. For best film and best director At the 31st International Film Festival Moscow Lungin 2009 was chairman of the competition jury. Also in 2009, his historical film Tsar was shown over two years in the life of Ivan the Terrible in Cannes in the Un Certain Regard side row.
