Pavel Tonkov

Pavel Sergeyevich Tonkow (Russian Павел Сергеевич Тонков; born February 9, 1969 in Izhevsk ) is a former Russian cyclist.

Career

Tonkow originally started with the swim, but decided after a falling out with his former coach finally for cycling. In the Red Army, he rises to the rank of lieutenant. The road Cycling World Championships 1987 in Italy, he won the race in the U23 class before Erik Dekker. Tonkow was only in 1992 pro. He was successful in his first Giro d' Italia immediately. He was seventh in 1992 and until 1996 he finally won in the following years, fifth, fourth and sixth. Even after he was twice runner-up, fifth and once in the Vuelta a España in 1999 and fourth in 2000, third. Overall, he won in his career six stages at the Giro. He also won other big races such as the Tour de Suisse in 1995 with a lead of 11 seconds on the Swiss Alex Zülle or the Tour de Romandie. At the end of the 2005 season, he decided to end his career.
