Petrov Val

Wal Petrov (Russian Петров Вал ) is a town with 13,239 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Volgograd Oblast (Russia).

Location

Petrov Wal lies 185 km north of the regional center of Volgograd and about 970 km southeast from Moscow, on the left Don Creek Ilowlja. The nearest town is the raion center Kamyshin, which is located some 20 km west of Petrov whale.

History

The place was built after the 17th century, first as a village, which had taken its name from the failed build a channel connection between the Don and the Volga ( the precursor of today's Volga-Don Canal) in the 1690 's. This fact emerged in this area by digging numerous artificial mounds, which were popularly Peter Wall, in Russian Petrov whale, named because of the canal construction was initiated by the then Tsar Peter the Great.

From the 19th century the railroad was built near Wal Petrov, connecting the city of Saratov and Volgograd among others. 1949 Petrov whale was an urban-type settlement, 1988, a rajonunterstellte city.

Today Petrov whale is a railway junction at the intersection of routes Saratov -Volgograd and Tambov Kamyshin with railway workshops and other rail-related businesses. One kilometer north of the town is the military airfield Lebjaschje.
