Petten

Petten is a Dutch village in North Holland with about 1500 inhabitants. It is located in the town of Schagen ( until the end of 2012 Zijpe ) behind the dike " Pettemer Zeewering ".

On November 21, 1421, the village was destroyed by the " Sint- Elisabethsvloed ", then it was further inland rebuilt where it was again destroyed in the 17th century by another storm surge. 1943 Petten was blown up by German troops, built after the war by the villagers. To commemorate this event is in the town center a column of the stones of the ruined church.

Today Petten offers visitors numerous ways in which marine fisheries of the groyne, beach access for wheelchair users, extensive biking and hiking trails along the dike and the surrounding dunes, or the visit to the exhibition of coastal protection " Dijk te Pay with ". The campsite " Corfwater " is considered the campsite next to the beach in North Holland.

International significance of the Dutch energy research center ECN ( which is actually closer to the neighboring community of St. Maartenszee, but is still one of Petten ). It has existed since 1955 and is also home to the Institute for Energy of the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.
