Zijpe

Zijpe ( Seipe ) ( listen / i?) Was a town in the Dutch province of North Holland with 11584 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2012). Since 1 January 2013, it belongs to the municipality Schagen.

Places

Zijpe is located about 58 km north- west of Amsterdam. The community house is located in Schagerbrug.

For the former municipality included the following villages: Abbestede, Burgerbrug, Burgervlotbrug, Schagen, De Stolpen, Groote Keeten, Oudesluis, Petten, Schagerbrug, Sint Maartensbrug, Sint Maartensvlotbrug, Sint Maartenszee and 't Zand and the hamlet Het Korfwater.

Neighboring towns are: to the north of Den Helder, Holland Kroon and Schagen, to the east and south Harenkarspel mountains.

History

Name Explanation: The name means Sijpe about: watercourse ( Dutch: doorsijpelen as much as leaked ).

In the early Middle Ages it was land that was flooded by storm surges. There was a lake that threatened to flood in every storm again. Among other things, the painter Jan van Scorel, who came from the surrounding area, advocated the draining of Zijpe Lake.

The municipality was created in 1597 by Zijpe reclamation and grew after the incorporation of the formerly independent communities Petten (1929 ) and Schagen, Abbestede and Groote Keeten (all incorporated in 1989 ) to the size of the end of 2012.

Economy

For the economy, not only tourism, but also the research is ( EURATOM Experimental Reactor in Petten ) and the cultivation of flower bulbs of importance.

The nearest railway station is located in Schagen.
