The horse head in Treisberg in the Hessian Hochtaunuskreis is a 662.6 m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Taunus low mountain range and after Weilberg ( 700.7 m), Dillberg ( 682.4 m) and Sängelberg ( 665 m) is the fourth highest peak in the Eastern Hintertaunus.

Geography

Location

The horse head is in Taunus Nature Park and belongs to the municipality of Schmitten, the boundary to that of Weilrod on the northern and western edge runs. The mountain, whose summit rises about 600 m south-southwest of Treisberg ( to Schmitten ), is located between Hunoldstal in the northeast, Brombach in the east, Dorfweil (all to Schmitten ) in the southeast and the Schmittener nucleus in the south and between Mauloff in the west and Finsterthal (both to Weilrod ) in the west-northwest. East of the arc around the mountain flows the Weil, after the north-east and then west-northwest in the direction of the Lahn, and west runs the Weil inflow Niedgesbach, after north-northwest and then northeast. While the landscape of the mountain drops in most directions in the valleys of these streams, it passes on ( 596 m) south to the head box.

Nature Spatial allocation

The horse head belongs in the main physiographic unit Taunus group ( number 30) in the main unit Eastern Hintertaunus (302) for natural area horse head -Taunus ( 302.6 ).

Geology

Geologically the mountain to one of the so-called Feldberg- horse head - floe that has been formed in the Tertiary and has large differences in relief.

Reserves

Directly west of the horse head, the nature reserve sow and Niedgesbach be at Schmitten ( CDDA-Nr. 165327; 1995 reported; 64 ha ) and the Fauna- Flora-Habitat area Niedges, sow and Kirrbachtal between Mauloff and Schmitten (FFH No.. 5716-306; 104 ha).

Lookout tower horse head

The horse head is the 34 meter high observation tower horse head, which was rebuilt by the Umlandverband Frankfurt and the Schmitten was handed over on 10 November 1987. At the tower base table and benches were set up.

The tower offers a panoramic view of the surrounding Taunus hills of the Eastern and Western Hintertaunus, the High Taunus with the almost complete view of the Taunus main ridge, the central high- Taunus ( Feldberg Taunus ridge ) to the Great Feldberg ( 881.5 m) and Kleiner Feldberg ( 825, 2 m ) and Usinger in the pelvis and Weiltal.

In good weather, the view extends to the southwest over the low-lying main incision of the Taunus mountains main ridge at Niederseelbach the Palatinate Forest, west to North Palatine Uplands with the 83 km distant thunder mountain (about 687 m). You can see then:

To the west of the Hunsrück with the Soonwaldsteig in 67 km distance, the salt head ( 627.6 m), Kandrich ( 638.6 m), before the Kemeler back of the western Hintertaunus with Mappershainer head ( 548 m), Gray head ( 543.4 m ) and the front Hunsrück with the Fleckertshöhe ( 529.8 m).

In the northwest Westerwald with the Montabaurer height with alarm bar ( 545.2 m) and Koppel ( 540.2 m ) to the northwest in the low- Westerwald with Malberg (422 m). To the north extends the High Westerwald with Gallows Hill ( 649.7 m), Salzburger Kopf ( 654.2 m), Homberg ( 635.3 m) of Höllberg ( 642.8 m) in 44 km distance; further north the Gladenbacher Bergland including Damshäuser tops with cap ( 493.5 m), Rimberg ( 497.1 m), 63 km away and also the basalt cone of Dünsberg ( 497.7 m).

In the northeast of Keller forest with the Hohen Lohr ( 656.7 m ) and the Hunsrück ( 635.9 m) in 93 km distance; the east of the Vogelsberg with baptismal font (773 m), 63 km away and the Herchenhainer height ( 733.1 m).

Southeast of the Rhön with the Dammersfeldkuppe ( 927.9 m ) 102 km distance and 95 km away, three-position Zberg ( 660.4 m).

On the tower roof are mobile antennas.

Sport and Hiking

On the slope of horse head in Treisberg there are two ski lifts, which open up the steepest slopes of the Taunus. When snow conditions there is also a much-used sledding hill, which leads down almost to the road to Mauloff.

Ruin Land Stone

About 1.9 km north of the horse head summit is located in the ruins Weiltal country rock. The former Our Lady pilgrimage church from the 15th century was already destroyed in the Thirty Years ' War (1618-1648 ) and was not rebuilt. Get the ruins of the western tower with two side two storey side rooms.
