Philip W. Noel

Philip William Noel ( born January 6, 1931 in Providence, Rhode Iceland ) is a retired American politician. He was from 1973 to 1977 Governor of the State of Rhode Iceland.

Early years and political rise

Philip Noel attended after elementary school until 1954, the Brown University and studied at Georgetown University subsequent to 1957 Jura. He originally wanted to be an employee of the FBI. He changed this plan after U.S. Senator John O. Pastore had given him a job in the mailroom of the Senate.

Senator Pastore was to continue the mentor of Noel. Both were members of the Democratic Party. In 1958, encouraged Pastore Noel as a candidate for city council of Warwick. This was initially unsuccessful. Two years later he was but then elected to this body. Between 1967 and 1972, Noel was mayor of that city.

Governor of Rhode Iceland

In 1972 Philip Noel was elected governor of his state. He took office on January 2, 1973, it was up to the January 4, 1977 exercise. During this time he was on the board of the National Governors Association and chairman of the Association of Governors of the Democratic Party.

After John Pastore had announced his retirement from the Senate, Noel applied for its place. After he but generally came in the spring of 1976 with his characterization of poverty among African Americans with opposition and rejection, he had not only his chairmanship of the Association of Democratic governors resign, but his hopes for a seat in Congress buried. Instead his Republican John Chafee was elected senator. After this defeat, Noel worked as a lawyer. Today he lives with his wife Joyce Sandberg, with whom he had five children, in Estero, Florida.
